Breathing Cliffs came from my interest in treating the landscape and the animal as extensions of one another rather than separate subjects. I wanted the cougar to feel as though it was emerging from the cliffs themselves, almost like the mountain was breathing through it. The rock formations, atmosphere, and shifting colour transitions were designed to feel alive and constantly moving even within a moment of stillness.

Rather than focusing on dramatic action, I wanted the painting to carry tension through restraint. I was drawn to the contrast between the immense weight and permanence of the cliffs and the quiet, controlled presence of the cougar moving through them. The piece became more about awareness, solitude, and the feeling of existing within something far larger than yourself.

Throughout the painting, I pushed the interplay between warm light and cooler atmospheric passages to create a sense of depth that feels emotional as much as physical. I wanted the environment to feel immersive and reflective, allowing the viewer to slowly discover the connection between the animal, the terrain, and the silence surrounding them.
