This is a print of my original 42x28" acrylic on canvas Entering the Current
Stampede 2026, Wildlife Immersion Series
Entering The Current explores the moment when curiosity begins to outweigh caution. While the painting depicts three young bear cubs gathered along a river, the work is less about wildlife itself and more about the different ways we engage with the world when everything is still new. Each cub responds to the same environment differently. One is fully committed to pulling a salmon from the current, another pauses to investigate and understand, while the third remains slightly removed, observing before deciding its next step.
What drew me to this idea was the realization that growth often happens through participation rather than certainty. The river became a symbol of life itself, constantly moving and impossible to fully control. The cubs are not simply standing beside it; they are beginning to enter it, each in their own way. Their actions reflect different forms of learning through experience, curiosity, observation, and action. None of these approaches is presented as better than another. Together they create a broader reflection on how individuals discover their place within an ever changing world.
Throughout the painting, I wanted the movement of the water and the rhythm of the composition to reinforce this sense of transition and exploration. The salmon serves as both a literal and symbolic element, representing opportunity, challenge, and the rewards that often accompany effort and persistence. The cubs may not yet fully understand the world around them, but they are beginning to engage with it.
For me, Entering The Current is ultimately about the early stages of growth when exploration takes precedence over certainty. It reflects the willingness to step into unfamiliar experiences, to learn through participation, and to gradually discover who we become by moving with the current rather than standing safely at its edge.
