Toward Understanding explores the difference between imitation and awareness. I wanted the three owlets following the mother’s posture to represent the instinctive way we first learn by copying those we look up to, while the fourth owlet quietly observing her suggests the beginning of something deeper. Rather than simply repeating behaviour, it becomes aware that wisdom itself is something worth seeking.

I was drawn to the subtle emotional shift between mimicry and conscious observation. The painting is not about one owl being more intelligent than the others, but about the quiet moment when curiosity begins to turn into understanding. The mother owl became less of a literal parent figure and more of a symbol of guidance, patience, and knowledge existing within the natural world.

Throughout the piece, I focused on creating a calm atmospheric stillness that allows the gestures and relationships between the owls to carry the meaning. I wanted the painting to feel contemplative and open-ended, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationship with learning, growth, and the gradual search for understanding over time.
